Geisha Pillow available at Etsy.com

This is a very unique set of pillows called "takamakura" which means "tall pillow". These were used by Geisha/Maiko to keep their elaborate hair styles perfect even while sleeping but it wasn't easy to sleep on them so to reinforce the importance of having perfect hair, rice was poured around the base of the support. If the geisha's head rolled off the support while she slept, rice would stick in her hair. The girl would thus have to repeat this process until her head no longer rolled from its support. Typically, without this happening, a geisha would have her hair styled about every week.

The base of the 2 two pillows is "urushi" or Japanese wood lacquer. Please look carefully at the pictures.

Each pillow measures about 23cmlong x17 cm tall x 9 cm wide. This is heavy-about 3 kgs (close to 6.6 lbs)

It is in excellent condition. It will be packed carefully and shipped via EMS express post which includes tracking and insurance.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are in Africa or a South American country that isn't listed please contact me before buying as I will need to calculate the shipping for your country. I will cancel the order if you don't contact me first because the shipping you pay under "everywhere else" won't be enough to ship to your country. Thanks for understanding.
